3 Reasons Why Employee Wellness Is So Important

Over the last few years employee wellness programs has grown as a concept in the workplace, focusing on helping employees influence their own health, quality of life, mental wellbeing and, consequently, their performance at work.

But some still wonder if employee wellness is actually worth the costs?

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

  • 59% of employees do not get adequate exercise
  • 50% or more have high cholesterol
  • 27% have cardiovascular disease
  • 26% are overweight by 20 percent or more
  • 24% have high blood pressure
  • 80% of employees feel stressed because of work

Did you know that between 70 to 90 percent of healthcare spending is caused by preventable, modifiable health risks such as the ones noted above?

So Here Are 3 Reasons Why Employee Wellness Is Important

Employee wellness

1) Wellness Programs Reduce Health Care Costs

Unhealthy lifestyle choices often lead to chronic diseases, costing businesses more than one trillion dollars in lost productivity alone.

In the US, businesses lose up to $300 billion every year, as a result of workplace stress. Stress also causes around one million workers to miss work every single day. Certainly, stress is bad for business, and this is measurable in economic terms. Employee stress shows itself through absence due to sickness, high turnover, and reduced productivity.

What all of this means is that promoting healthier behaviors can really pay off, which is the reason why employee wellness programs are such a hot topic right now.

2) Wellness Programs Improve Employee Health Behaviors

The core of every good wellness program is behavior change. With the right education, motivation, tools, and social support, people can change their behaviors.

Wellness programs are good at helping people adopt and maintain healthy behaviors. This is one of the biggest benefits of having an employee wellness program.

3) Employee Wellness Programs Build and Help Sustain High Employee Morale

A workplace culture sets the tone for its employees. A supportive work environment, where managers reinforce a sound wellness strategy, can keep employees motivated and engaged. Wellness and incentive programs can be used to drive and reinforce healthy behaviors, bringing benefits to the employer, the employee, and to the community.

So will it actually have a positive return on investment?

There is an enormous amount of research to support the benefits of employee wellness programs. A comprehensive wellness program is going to improve employee health and improve your organization’s bottom line. It is not going to make all your problems go away, but it is going to help you create a worksite culture of health and wellbeing.

Research has shown that after about three years, your wellness program will have a positive return on investment. But the secret is, after three years almost nobody cares about the ROI.

That may have been a good reason to start your wellness program, but after employees start to engage, communicate with each other, and feel valued and appreciated, the reasons for doing a wellness program change. After three years many business love it because they like the way it has changed their worksite culture.

Employees are obviously healthier, but more importantly they are happier. With an effective wellness program you will improve the lives of your employees and help drive the success of your organization.
